Summary / Abstract:

ENThe paper discuses the subject of sociology of higher education. It is generally agreed that there are at least three major sociological perspectives, identified here as structural functionalism, interpretative sociology and conflict or critical theories. The earliest influential sociological theories of education generally and of higher education particully emerged within structural funcionalist analysis. For E. Durkheim the task of sociology with respect to education is to uncover and specify the "normal" characteristics for any given society in order to ensure closer integration between society and individuals. The work of Talcott Parsons represents the functionalist view that the education system are responsible for inculcating common social values. The central assumption of structural functionalist analysis, the presupposition that social stratification and inequality are necessary structural features of advanced societies. The reproduction of society involves an assumed hierarchy of positions that must be filled with suitably qualified and motivated people. Very close to structural functionalist analysis are technological functionalism, human capital theory and status attainment research which are presented in paper too. The theories of Conflict analyse the higher education as a field of encounter of the interests of different social groups and as reproduction of higher social classes and stratum. The research within the interpretative tradition support functionalist and critical analyses of social reproduction, but at the same time stresses the necessity to research on meaning of behaviour.
