Summary / Abstract:

LTZoomorfinių arba gyvūninių motyvų ornamentika formavosi Europos Šiaurėje IV–V a. Lietuvos teritorijoje gyvūninės ornamentikos randama nuo VI a. Rytų Pabaltijo zoomorfinė ornamentika, kurios ištakos siekia V a. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Kuršiai; Germanai; Zoomorfinis/gyvūninis stilius; Papuošalai; Lankinės segės; Apvaliosios segės; Pasaginės segės; Apyrankės; Didysis tautų kraustymosi laikotarpis; Vikinginis laikotarpis; Zoomorfinis stilius; Curonians; Germans; Zoomorphic/animal style; Ornaments; Crossbow fibulas; Round flat fibulas; Penannular fibulas; Bracelets; Great Migration of the nations; Viking Period.

ENThe ornamentation of zoomorphic or animal motifs formed in the northern part of Europe in the 4th–5th centuries. Animal ornamentation found in the territory of Lithuania dates back to the 6th century. When analysing the genesis and development of this style researchers note that the problem is complicated and ambiguous. Lithuanian archaeologists who explored the issue of the origins of the animal style and manifestation in the Baltic lands at various periods expressed different opinions. Some consider that the zoomorphic style developed in the Baltic tribes mainly as a result of natural internal development. However, others state that it formed primarily due to the influence and impact of Scandinavian and Central European cultures. Whatever the case, the local ornamentation traditions are no less important than the impact of other cultures. The Eastern Baltic zoomorphic ornamentation, which dates back to the second half of the 5th century and the 6th century, as well as the findings from the 9th–12th centuries are basically different from the Germanic animal style findings. Starting with the 6th century the articles of jewellers of the Baltic tribes (including the Curonians) are characterised by greater geometrisation, whereas the Germanic artists perfected more realistic shapes. In the 8th–12th centuries, basing on the general European zoomorphic art traditions, Curonian jewellers created their own distinctive variant of this style which was differently expressed in individual groups of jewellery. Curonian jewellery demonstrates the start and development stages of zoomorphic style. A reptile was chosen to represent the image of the Curonian, and generally the Baltic, zoomorphic style.
