Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyzes the settlements of the type of Dubičiai and the Neolithic Neman culture in the Southern Lithuania. The most important trait of the Lithuanian ceramics of the Dubičiai type is the winding branding, which distinguishes it from the Byelorussian ceramics of the early Neolith. The settlements of the Dubičiai type are monuments of the transitional period (the early Neolith of the Southern Lithuania) between the Mesolithic and Neolithic cultures of Neman. Early Neolithic articles were found almost in all the studied sandy Stone Age settlements in the Southern Lithuania. The ceramics of the Neman culture during the time period of the middle – late Neolith was quite similar. The discovered complexes of findings give reasons to believe that in the late Neolith the traditions of the Neman culture underwent transformation and decline. The commencement of the late Neolith in Lithuania is related with the appearance of the cultures of spheral amphorae and string ceramics. The absence of radiocarbon dates in the latest settlements of the Neman culture gives reasons to believe that the Neman traditions disappeared in the Southern Lithuania likely before 2000 BC, to a certain extent earlier than in Byelorussia.
