Summary / Abstract:

LTXII a. pabaigoje susidarė Lietuvos žemių konfederacija, o XIII a. 4 deš. viduryje - valstybė. Tad galima teigtina, kad dabartinės Šiaurės Lietuvos tarmės, patarmės ir šnektos, o XVI-XVIII a. administraciniai junginiai (Žemaitijos kunigaikštystės, Trakų vaivadystės šiaurinių dalių pavietai) šiaurinėje LDK dalyje formavosi XII-XIII a. buvusių žiemgalių administracinių vienetų pagrindu. Visai kitokia padėtis susiklostė latviškoje Žiemgalos dalyje. administracinis suskirstymas XVI-XVIII a. nesutapo su senuoju, ir beveik nepastebimas buvusių centrų tęstinumas.Reikšminiai žodžiai: Žiemgala; Rytų Baltijos regionas; Tervetė; Duobelė; Silenė; Žagarė; Duobenė; Sparnenė; Upmalė; Henriko Latvio kronika; Eiliuotoji Livonijos kronika; Vakarų Žiegala; Rytų Žiemgala; Semigallia; Western part of Semigallia; Eastern part of Semigallia.

ENAt the end of the 12th century there emerged the confederation of Lithuanian lands and in the middle of the thirties of the 13th century the state came into existence, which, in one way or another, had an influence to the neighbouring Semigallian lands, which, to a certain extent, determined the progress of the crusades. Being close to a significantly stronger enemy, i. e. the Order, Semigallia managed to withstand its attacks till 1290 and protected the state of Lithuania from the North. Upon performing a comparative analysis of cartography of objects of archeology and mythology and history, linguistics and natural sciences one can state that in the 12th – 13th century Semigallia there were about 14 more or less densely populated lands with centers in well-entrenched mounds and hill base settlements, formed of castle areas with central villages and the belonging field territories. The oldest limit between the Eastern and Western Semigallia in the 12th – 13th centuries was the river of Virčiuvis, which also remained the dividing line in the 16th – 19th centuries – it divided Šiauliai and Upytė districts. The longest continuity of the dividing lines can be traced in the Lithuanian part of Semigallia therefore one could state that the dialects of the present-day Northern Lithuania and the administrative compounds of the 16th – 18th centuries (districts of the Duchy of Samogitia and the Northern parts of the voivodeship of Trakai) in the Northern part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania were formed on the basis of the former Semigallian administrative units of the 12th – 13th centuries. An entirely different situation came into existence in the Latvian part of Semigallia, where the administrative distribution of the 16th – 18th centuries did not coincide with the old one therefore the continuation of the former centres is virtually not visible.
