Summary / Abstract:

ENBased on texts from Samogitian conversational daily discourse of the 2nd half of the 20th century, presented in the book Taip šneka tirkšliškiai (hereinafter – TŠT), the article discusses the contexts, structure and functions of Samogitian narratives about dreams. The conversations on the theme of dreams presented in TŠT provide an opportunity to evaluate the interlocutors’ positional roles, to identify the pretexts for the conversations about dreams and the intentions of such narratives, as well as understand which stories on the images of dreams became the narrative experience of a broader community and were no longer confined to a single family. The conversations on dreams collected in TŠT reveal the co-existence of two models of dream perception and interpretation, where an individual (psychological) perception of dream images is verified by referring to the traditional meanings of dream images as an opportunity to foresee the future. Narratives about one’s own and others’ dreams found in TŠT, as well as the situations of dream perception and interpretation, show a close interpersonal connections among both family and community members. The sharing of stories about dreams in Samogitian daily life was a way to solve psychological problems (to express one’s anxiety, apprehension, fear), to maintain values, or to slow down changes in the value system. Keywords: Samogitian daily discourse; narratives about dreams; values. [From the publication]
