ENTraditional dictionaries of many languages reflect their compilers' efforts to provide information as concisely as possible; therefore, part of independent lexicographic units are given within the entries of other lexicographic units whit.li are as independent as the former. The conciseness of information is sought for different linguistic and extra-linguistic reasons: trying to save space, saving time of the Lexicographer and the user and relying on the sensibility of the user. It happens quite often that some derivatives, for example, names of actions and characteristics derived with the help of the suffixes - imas / -ymas and umas, -ybė are not given under separate entries due to their regular pattern of derivation and productivity. Hoverer, in the electronic database the same type of information should be given in the same format and as precisely as possible, so that electronic data search would be optimal and reliable. Therefore, all derivatives to be included into the database should be given like all other words, i.e. as independent lexicographic units rather than as unit-related secondary information.Precise data of the Database of Standard Lithuanian Lexicon are important for dictionary compilers, applied linguists, teachers as well as researchers focusing on the investigation of the lexicon, grammar, word formation, syntactic combinability and other areas of language study, particularly those whose research draws on contemporary language use. Therefore, the database arranged in conformity with the requirements will be useful when compiling dictionaries, writing guidebooks and textbooks and doing research into language. More precise data may serve as a basis for its proper storage, arranging, classifying and analyzing. It is highly probable that more precise statistical! investigation of the lexicon and its results will provide an opportunity to reconsider persisting problems, will help solve debatable issues and give impetus to new ideas. It is obvious that database based future dictionaries will be more varied and more systemic. [From the publication]
