Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article consists of two parts: the first, named “Cattle as Wealth”, and the second, “Animal Shaped Treasure”. In the first part, the linguistic and other data, mostly already known to scholars, that “the chief standard of value in the IE period and in the history of the IE-speaking peoples before the introduction of actual ‘money’ based on coinage was cattle” (Carl Darling Buck), are presented, and a few supplementary Lithuanian facts are also added. In the second, attention is drawn to those mythological tales in which a hidden treasure appears in the form of an animal (when struck, it usually crumbles into money). The confrontation of the second part of the article with the first one by itself leads to the conclusion that in this fabulous image of the animal-shaped treasure, we have a relic of the notion of the cattle as wealth, thereby still more reinforcing this notion, supporting it by folklore material and, on the other hand, explaining the given folklore image as historical heritage.
