ENThree projects of the Lithuanian Army establishment from 1683–1684 prove that King John III competed with the Sapiehas for the influence in the Army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as early as the time of preparations for the Vienna campaign. As a result, the king succeeded in restoring the institution of royal military units called chorągwie (literally: banners) within the Lithuanian army establishment in the form of Hussar and Petyhorcy units, abolished seventeen years earlier. It is certain that the first existed in 1683–1696, and offered certain possibilities to struggle against the Sapiehas’ hegemony. But neither at that time nor later was the king able to reconstruct the division of the Lithuanian Army into two separate divisions, like it used to be in 1654–1666 and 1674–1676, in order to get a large part of the Lithuanian military forces out from under the control of the Sapiehas. The very formation of units under the king’s name within the Lithuanian forces in 1683 was undoubtedly one of the most important successes of John III in his rivalry with the Sapiehas for influence in the Lithuanian Army at the threshold of the Vienna campaign. It would require further research, however, to determine the role of this factor played in later years of Sobieski’s reign (1684–1696), mainly as part of the building process of the anti-Sapieha republican camp.
