Summary / Abstract:

ENThe notion of “Greek mode” is a rather normal “guest” in ethno-musicological publications. However, it is applicable only when it comes to diatonic music, whereas, traditional music is not always diatonic. The article aims at examining the validity of the phenomenon of "Greek mode" by applying methods of acoustic analysis. Three samples of vocal traditions have been chosen for the research. Those are: two typical vocal traditions of the Dzukija region (26 songs performed by Jonas Jakubauskas and 20 songs performed by Petras Zalanskas) and 25 songs performed in the dialect of the Suvalkija region. As the samples are rather vast (several thousand measurements), only one melostrophe of each song has been chosen for general assessment. The analysis of intonation stability has shown that the upper tonal support is characteristic of the dialect of the Dzukija region. This correlates with M. Charlap and E. Aleksejev’s opinion about the significance of the upper tonal support in the development of modes. As the majority of modes analysed in the research are more equitonic rather than diatonic, the usage of the notion of "Greek modes" could be unreasonable and inaccurate. The article describes the results of two experiments, which illustrate the way the samples of equitonic music are misinterpreted as being diatonic under the impact of the apperception of equal temperament, which, as a consequence, results in the emergence of “Greek modes”. The results of the research show that the classifications of Lithuanian traditional musical modes (suggested by Teodoras Brazys, Jadvyga Čiurlionytė, Genovaitė Četkauskaitė and others) are erroneous.
