ENIn our modern society market needs are rapidly changing, different specialists and employers set different requirements for employees. Future graduates of higher education institutions have to be able to compete successfully in the labour market and to adapt swiftly to the changing conditions. New challenges drew attention to those areas of competence that provide the basis for developing skills necessary to work successfully, i.e. core skills, as those skills have become as important as expert knowledge and skills. The article defines the concept of core skills, discusses importance of and the need to develop those skills. The aim of the article is to ascertain the need for the development of core skills at the Technical Faculty of Vilnius College of Technologies and Design and to give recommendations for their improvement. Objectives: 1. To define the concept of core skills 2. To find out students’ attitude towards the development of core skills 3. To discuss possibilities for the development of core skills 4. To provide methods for the development of core skills Survey methods: literature review, questionnaire survey, data analysis and summing-up. The survey showed that in the Technical Faculty of Vilnius College of Technologies and Design core skills are being developed, but not during all classes, therefore core skills should be integrated across different subject areas and teaching curricula and relevant teaching models should be developed. It is desirable to give preference to active teaching methods, make use of complex tasks and create a uniform core skills assessment system. [From the publication]
