ENThe paper discusses in detail the historical geography of the largest land of the Curonians, Ceklis. It relies on the 1253 Act of division of Southern Curonia, on the historiographical work performed up-to-date in order to localise the places mentioned in the act, and on the existing data concerning the archaeological monuments of North-West Lithuania from the 13th century. The results of the division of Curonia, confirmed by Henricus, the bishop of Curonia, and by the representatives of the Livonian Order on 4th April, 1253 in Kuldiga, were the outcome of the military occupation of the Curonians which commenced in 1230. There were two separate acts; the first divided the Northern Curonian lands that were already actually under the German rule, and the second was concerned with the Southern Curonian territories where German administration had not yet been created. Acts survived in the 14th-16th century transcriptions and were published by F. G. Bunge in 1853. There are 44 toponyms mentioned in the land of Ceklis that have been attracting scholars’ attention for more than two centuries. Although major part of Ceklis’ historical geography has been explored, now, as the new data accumulate (especially as a result of analysing the archaeological monuments), the need arises for some supplements and corrections. Systematic assessment of the list of toponyms and its collation with the archaeological material yielded new results; 38 out of 44 localities have been placed.. [From the publication]
