Summary / Abstract:

LTMatematinių ir kiekybinių metodų taikymas archeologijoje buvo daugiausia paskatintas procesinės archeologijos atstovų, siekiant „pakelti“ archeologijos „moksliškumo lygį“. Nuo pirmųjų panaudojimo atvejų matematinės statistikos metodas archeologų vertinamas nevienodai. Šio straipsnio objektas yra matematinės statistikos metodų pritaikymas archeologijoje. Straipsnio tikslas – apžvelgti svarbiausių matematinės statistikos metodų taikomąsias galimybes bei problemas archeologijos mokslo požiūriu ir pristatyti šių metodų panaudojimo atvejus archeologijoje, pateikiant nuorodas į literatūrą platesniam skaitymui. ENThe goal of archeology is an objective examination of a research object (past societies) based on material sources left by those cultures (archeological finds). We presume that the best way to research mass information is by using statistical methods. By using statistical methods and statistical software, we can process incredible amounts of archeological data. Statistical methods (if chosen correctly) highlight consistent patterns without any interpretation (statistical methods are only instruments for recording, their results can only be interpreted by the researcher). Most fundamental natural laws are formulated using propositions with the generality quantifier. In other words, they are understood as natural (are not linked in any way with the researcher’s personality) and global. The only consistent patterns that we can find in archeology could be formulated on the basis of statistical conclusions. Using statistics in archaeology can be divided into three stages: 1953–1960 – using quantitative statistical methods for the analysis of numerical data; 1981–1990 – using statistics for the spatial and GIS analysis, and 1995–1999 – using statistics for the image analysis, modeling and expert systems. These stages (with the theoretic background and cases) are described in this article. [From the publication]
