ENAntanas Salys' works contain several remarks about the Western Aukštaitians. At the beginning of the twentieth century he noted that the subdialect of Šiauliai was similar to Standard Lithuanian. The data, collected in the environs of Joniškis between 1998 and 2002, showed that this area actually encompassed three subdialects, i.e. those of Joniškis, Kriukai and Žagarė. Certain parallel syntactical constructions, peculiar not only to those three subdialects but to the Latvian language as well, were recorded here, cf. possessive forms, debitive and subjunctive forms, interjections, etc. The phonetic peculiarities of the three subdialects are also dealt with in the paper.
