Recent excavations at Klaipėda castle - a preliminary report
Summary / Abstract:

ENKlaipeda (Memel) Castle in western Lithuania was built in 1252 and transformed into the Dutch-type bastion castle at the beginning of the 17th century. It ended its days as a military fortress in 1770. Archaeological excavations have been conducted on the castle remains since 1968. The main excavations took place in 2014, when four plots straddling the eastern curtain wall were investigated (1,100 m2 in all). The excavations revealed wooden structures in the form of three rows of posts reinforcing the ramparts and a brick wall belonging to the inner castle wall. Over 25,000 different artefacts dating from the 13th-17th centuries were recovered, including some 13,000 medieval iron nails, 800 fishing hooks, 500 ship clench bolts and 500 fishing net weights. The excavations also revealed that scientific stud): of Klaipeda Castle faces a number of challenges, the most important of which is the need to collate the results of all excavations performed over the past half century.
