Summary / Abstract:

ENThe analysis of verb endings allows to establish the sequence of the development of the Baltic verb conjugation paradigm. The common inheritance — the forms of the Present tense underwent phonetic (1.1.) and systematic (1.2.) changes in all the Baltic languages. There are developmental tendencies common for all the Baltic languages (disappearance of athematic forms, appearance of suffixed verbs and of the Past tense conjugation system after the model of the Present tense forms), and there are essential differences responsible for the separation of the East Baltic and West Baltic conjugation systems. The principal changes in the Old Prussian verb are the establishment of the diphthongs ai / ei in most of the forms (1.2.2.), the establishment of new endings -sei (for the 2nd Person) and -ts (for the 3rd Person) (1.2.З.), and the correlation of hard and soft stems (1.2.4.). The models of the Past tense forms in the Baltic languages are similar, although there were differences in the formation of the ending systems. The same applies to suffixed verbs: the suffixes and their forms have much in common in the Baltic languages, yet endings were connected to them in different ways. The Auslaut of the stem ending (either the root or the suffix) was of a special significance to the system of verb endings. The forms with the consonant Auslaut in all the Baltic languages usually had thematic endings, and the development of the forms with the vowel Auslaut was different. The forms of stem verbs with the vowel Auslaut in the Present tense were similar to the East Baltic forms, i.e. a frequent insertion of the suffixed n or š between the root and the thematic ending could be observed (1.3.). Yet the forms of suffixed verbs and all the Past tense forms with the vowel Auslaut had typical zero Sg endings and the athematic type of connecting PI endings (1.4.2. and 2.2.), and in that Old Prussian was different from the East Baltic languages with their typical š insertion and thematic endings. The differences witness the appearance of the Past tense and suffixed forms being a common Baltic phenomenon, yet the formation of the ending system took place later, after the separation of the languages.
