Summary / Abstract:

Степ-камень) ir šalia esanti pelkė Zastebje (rus. Застебье), iš kurios pietinės dalies, netoli minėto akmens, anksčiau ištekėdavo upė. Tai mito apie upės atsiradimą vieta. Akmens pavadinimas naujesniais laikais siejamas su krikščionių šventuoju Steponu (rus. Cтепан), o netoli auganti sena pušis yra vadinama krikščionių kankinės Akvilinos (rus. Акилина, Акулина) vardu. Archeologiniai duomenys – I tūkstantmečio antrosios pusės–II tūkstantmečio pradžios pilkapiai, yra organiška teritorinio komplekso dalis.

ENThe article attempts to reconstruct the sacred landscapes of the river Vilija, called Neris in Lithuanian. It is relied on folkloric material collected in 1857-2007, as well as archaeological, historical, linguistic and cartographic data. The essential objects of this sacred landscaping are a large stone, called the local stone Stepas (rus. Степ-камень) and a swamp nearby called Zastebje (rus. Застебье), from souther part of which the river earlier flooded to the aforementioned stone. This is the place of the myth about appearance of the river. The name of a stone in the newer times is associated with the Christian saint Steponas (rus. Cтепан), while old pine growing nearby is called by the name of Christian martyr Akvilina (rus. Акилина, Акулина).Archaeological data of the second part of the 1st millennium and barrows of the beginning of the 2nd millennium is an organic part of territorial complex. The location of the barrows relates to the old roads and directions of movement. The origins of the myth of the beginning of the river related to miracles can be seen in pagan times when a stone (a male element) was symbolically paired with water (a female element). The current name of a stone may be the kinship of the word of Baltic origin stabas - the pagan worship object. And from here the slavish name Zastebje, like the swamp, behind the idol appears. Attention is drawn to the fact that the area could have been part of the Vikings route from the “Varangians to the Greek”, and the stone is the sign of it. It is a divide between the Vilija and Berezina area, and taking a wider look at the divide between the Nemunas and the Dnieper, between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea.
