ENThe diminutives of nouns in Širvintiškiai sub dialect are used in the following speech situations: 1) when they name small, petty things or young people; when there is a desire to protect oneself from something; when the usage of diminutives of nouns is understood as a colloquial feature, but the evaluation is not expressed explicitly; 2) when the subjects named by the diminutives of nouns are evaluated positively (they are small and kind; only kind; when compassion, exhortation, expostulation, appeal are denoted); 3) when the derivatives of nouns are used in such speech situations where the subjects they name are evaluated negatively (subjects show aridity, and when somebody is cursing); 4) when the diminutives emphasize the size of the subjects (the extensive context is needed to perceive a speech situation).
