ENArchbishop Mečislovas Reinys (1884-1953) was a distinguished scholar, academician of the LCAS, professor, politician and a social activist who finished his hard and honorable pastoral life road as bishop in the Vladimir prison. The purpose of this paper was to review the beginnings of Archbishop M. Reinys' life road on the basis of the archival records - the KGB agents' reports. The Soviet authorities displayed much interest in the personality of Bishop Mečislovas Reinys already in 1940, for he enjoyed an indisputable authority not merely in the archdiocese of Vilnius, but also throughout Lithuania. It is evidenced by the files of the Archbishop which are available in the Lithuanian Special Archives. 11 reports contained in the file of M. Reinys show that the soviet security was interested in 3 main aspects of his activity: 1. The statements of the sermons preached by Bishop M. Reinys and other pastors. 2. The interrelations between the Lithuanian and Polish clergy. 3. The Archbishop's personal views on the Soviet power and the policy executed by it. The reports reveal Archbishop Mečislovas Reinys' attitude towards the faith, bolshevism, atheistic propaganda and his views on pre-electoral propaganda. Stalin's constitution and its execution in practical life, prospects concerning the struggle against the Soviet power and the inevitable collapse of the socialist soviet state. The Archbishop's stand-point concerning bolshevism demonstrated his conviction that apart from tyranny and immoral life it was not in power to create anything positive. His idea that bolshevism should be looked upon as the worst enemy of religion and that every virtuous catholic should regard bolshevism as his enemy, was later, during the period of German occupation, expressed in his special contributions to the "Naujoji Lietuva" and "Karys". This fact served as one of the motives to convict Archbishop Mečislovas Reinys for anti-Soviet propaganda and, as a traitor of the nation, he was sentenced to a term of 8 years in the Vladimir prison. Up to his death there on November 8, 1953 Archbishop M. Reinys continued to be a faithful and unshakable spiritual shepherd of his nation. Conclusions: 1. The KGB agents' reports show that Archbishop M. Reinys' personality was in the constant focus of attention of the Soviet authorities. 2. Archbishop M. Reinys was followed by the people of his own close environment. 3. The KGB agents' reports reveal Archbishop M. Reinys' firm standpoint concerning the catholic faith and bolshevism. 4. The KGB agents' reports paved Archbishop M. Reinys' road to the ranks of the New Martyrs of the 20th century. [text from author]
