Summary / Abstract:

[Iš leidinio]Reikšminiai žodžiai: Anykštėnų patarmė; Arealas; Kirčiuotų pailgėjusių balsių a, e kitimas; Šiauriniai ir pietiniai anykštėnai; Anykštėnai subdialect; Area; Change of stressed lengthened a and e vowels; Northern and southern Anykštėnai.

ENThe Lithuanian dialects have been thoroughly researched; however, analysis of vast empirical materials (i. e. sound recordings and transcribed texts) may result in detecting more scarcely known facts. Part of the present article is related to a slight correction of the Anykštėnai subdialectal area limits. Although the area of the subdialect is small, its inhabitants speak in highly diverse manners. Judging by the changes of the lengthened stressed vowels a and e in the subdialect under discussion, three subdialectal areas become prominent, i. e. (1) the northeastern area where only the vowel a undergoes changing (e. g., ratαs ‘wheel’ vs. gerαs ‘good’), i. e. a partial rotininkai feature; (2) the middle area where both vowels undergo changing (e. g., ratαs ‘wheel’ vs. gerαs ‘good’), i. e. a full rotininkai feature, and (3) the south area where both vowels undergo changes, yet they are diphthongised not in a fully consequent manner (e. g., ruotαs / rotαs ‘wheel’ vs. gierαs / gerαs ‘good’), i. e. the ruotininkai feature. The reason for the occurrence of the ruotininkai feature is avoidance of neutralisation of the opposition between the vowels a and o in stressed syllables. In the case of the occurrence of the rotininkai feature, the vowels a and o, as well as e and ė undergo almost total nivellation (e. g., the Standard Lithuanian words rado ‘found’ and rodo ‘is showing’ would sound almost identically, i. e. roda, and the words gedo ‘got rotten’ and gėda ‘shame’ sound as gẹ·dα. Therefore, the lengthened stressed vowels a and e are diphthongised, yet they do not match the real diphthongs uo and ie.Two areas of the Anykštėnai subdialect may be also distinguished on another basis. i. e. according to the pronunciation of unstressed long vowels. Representatives of the northern part of the Anykštėnai subdialect shorten them up to half–long vowels: e. g., givenù ‘I am living’, pukúotαs ‘fuzzy’; meanwhile, representatives of the southern part (not to be confused with the south Anykštėnai subdialect) shorten them up to short ones: e. g., givenù ‘I am living’, pukúotαs ‘fuzzy’. The limit between the two areas is located slightly to the north from Anykščiai, but it diverges slightly to the south in the eastern part of the subdialectal area. [From the publication]
