Summary / Abstract:

ENThis article presents the valuable source of Vilnius old town iconography. It is the evolvents of Pilies and Didžiosios (The Large) streets drawn by J.G. Gabšaitis on the Second World War. J.G. Gabšaitis was the officer of Vilnius municipality in the period of war between 1908 and 1918. There are 37 sheets containing graphics of Pilies and Didžiosios (The Large) streets except of the segment between St. Mykolo Street and St. Paraskevijos church in the Lithuanian National Museum. The draughtsman devided the street into 10 segments. He supplied the scheme of situation in the upper left comer of each sheet and made a line-drawing of the area which was in the evolvent. He had done evolvents precisely. The fronts of buildings were depicted properly with openings of doors and windows and architraves; all ledges, balconies, cornices and baroque roof windows. There are window-cases, inscriptions, Posters column. These evolvents show us what was lost in the war, after war and nowadays periods. The unsaved buildings from the square of K. Sirvydas (nowadays), from Didžiosios (The Large) street segment between Savičiaus str. and former Merchant guild and segment between Amatininkų užeiga and Vokiečių (German) street are in those drawings. The evolvents particularly described in the article appear as a very valuable source of a history of architecture up to scientists and restorers of architecture. [From the publication]
