Title:
Population ageing in Lithuania: the need for a new attitude towards ageing
Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Gyventojų senėjimas; Gyventojų senėjimo problema; Naujas požiūris; Lithuania; New attitude; Population ageing; Population aging problem.

ENOver the last two decades, Central and East European states, including Lithuania, have faced a vast number of changes. The research aims at defining the population ageing in Lithuania and demonstrating the challenges this phenomenon faces due to the existing attitude towards elderly people. The article analyses past and present demographical aspects of the ageing of population in Lithuania, i.e. the period within 1959–1989 (three decades of the Soviet regime) and within 1990–2009 (two decades of the transition period). It also analyses the engines of the population ageing and various challenges this process provokes. To summarise the foregoing, it may be concluded that in order to understand the demographic ageing of society and to cope with the consequences it brings, the following two dimensions are significant: the quantitative dimension (the course of the process itself, its statistical indicators) and the qualitative dimension (social attitude towards the above process and its axis – the elderly person). Measures (including political measures) are determined not by numbers, but by interpretations thereof. When a certain numerical expression of a phenomenon is not perceived as a national problem, no intellectual and financial resources will be allocated to solve it, and vice versa. Therefore, as long as the process of demographic ageing is negatively perceived and the place of elderly people in society is considered as controversial, the potential for solving problems related to elderly people’s welfare as well as to the ageing of population will remain limited.
