Summary / Abstract:

Be to, Lietuvoje brangstant darbui, užsienio investuotojams gali būti pelningiau investuoti į šalis su pigesne darbo jėga.

ENThe aim of the article is to analyse the factors mostly influencing the Lithuanian changing hierarchy of the centre and the periphery. Although the Lithuanian economy has been growing recently, the overall economic development of Lithuania is not so rapid when compared to that of other states. This can be explained by the fact that foreign investors are gradually diversifying their investments into more states thus decreasing their investments in Lithuania and slowing down its development. In addition, with labour force in Lithuania becoming more expensive, foreign investors may find it more profitable to invest into countries with cheaper labour force. The current economic crisis is somewhat a green light for Lithuania in such fields as, for example, biotechnologies. After the global economy recovers, Lithuania’s economy will need fewer efforts to regains its strong positions if compared to other 15 states of the EU. Although it is too early to draw conclusions, there is room for hope. The article is aimed at analysing three variables typically related to the hierarchy of the movement “centre-periphery”: direct foreign investment, the share of the export of high technologies in the overall export and the consumption of energy. It has been established that Lithuania is in the part of the growing trajectory, and direct foreign investments significantly correlate with the gross national income per capita. The second and the third hypotheses claiming that the export of Lithuanian high technologies and its energy consumption per capita are increasing have not proved to be true. This can be explained by the fact that such flourishing sectors as biotechnologies are not intensive in terms of energy.
