Summary / Abstract:

LTStraipsnyje, remiantis tradicinės (elitinio) ir šiuolaikinės (masinio) aukštojo mokslo sampratos, integralios asmenybės ugdymo koncepcijos ir šiuolaikinio išsilavinusio žmogaus sampratos metodologinėmis nuostatomis, analizuojama bendrojo ugdymo aukštosios mokyklos profesiniame rengime paskirtis, samprata, ypatingai akcentuojant edukacinę jo paskirtį, aptariamos aukštojo mokslo raidoje išryškėjusios traktuotės: klasikinė, besiremianti liberalaus ugdymo tradicijomis, profesinė, išreiškianti mokslo žinių sistemos susiskaidymo tendencijas ir šiuolaikinė, diktuojama žinių ir informacijos visuomenės poreikių. Atlikta analizė atskleidė kiekvienos iš šių traktuočių galimybes, siekiant bendrojo ugdymo aukštojoje mokykloje tikslų. ENThe main problem discussed in this article is that in the context of the concept of mass higher education the analysis of the purpose, the concept and possible approaches to general education at the university is important and there was little research made in that field. The aim of this article is to bring to light the purpose of general education at the university, to define the concept and to assess different approaches to that concept. The article is based on the following methodological principles: • the concept of the traditional and the contemporary higher education (Barnett, 1990); • the concept of the education of an integrated person (McLaughlin, 1997); • the concept of the contemporary educated person (Drucker, 1993). In this article the method of the analysis of scientific literature and documents is used. The aim of the article is analysed in two parts: in the first part I bring to light the concept and the purpose of general education at the university, and in the second part I evaluate different approaches to the concept of general education at the university. The analysis that was carried out about the purpose, the concept and possible approaches to general education at the university reveal the following conclusions: • The purpose of general education at the university is to educate a professional who is marked for his/her wide, not limited to one field of science perception, who understands professional activity in its broad sense and who is a personality with all the highest human qualities. General education at the university reveals the infiniteness of the knowledge in different areas of science and the possibility to use the required knowledge. It allows for further development by independently going deep into the field of scientific knowledge that is necessary at the time, and also it corresponds to the needs of the studying person, creating the premises for the education of an integrated person.• The concept and the purpose of general education at the university reveals that this is first of all general humanitarian-social education, methodologically based on the principles of general and professional ethics, developing the cognition beyond the sphere of natural sciences, expanding the possibilities of professional activity and developing human qualities by striving for the aims of educating an integrated person. • During the development of higher education the following basic concepts of general education at the university arose: classical, based upon the universitarian tradition of liberal education; professional, having emerged as a result of the fragmentation of the scientific knowledge system. These concepts partly reflect the purpose of general education and may be the basis for contemporary interpretation of general education. • The contemporary concept of general education at the university is orientated towards the training of an educated person in the society of knowledge and information. It performs in a composite manner the function of the development of professional possibilities, the powers of human cognition (thinking) and the powers of the education of an individual. General education is an integral part of contemporary professional higher education and for its structure and organisation is qualitatively different from classical or professional general education organised in the traditional way.
