ENThe Law on the Prohibition of Propagation of Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes and Their Ideologies (also known as the Law on Desovietization), which entered into force in Lithuania in 2023, has renewed the debate about the writers who contributed to the symbolic consolidation of Lithuania’s annexation in 1940. The renaming of spaces (schools and streets) named after writers was one of the consequences. The debate also led to the reform of memorial museums (The Memorial Flat-House Museum of Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius and The Venclova House-Museum). However, the case of the poet Salomėja Nėris (Salomėja Bačinskaitė-Bučienė), whose reception of texts has been constantly accompanied by the question of the link between the political and the literary planes, has attracted the most attention. This article proposes to add to the decades-long debate a topic that arrives late in Lithuanian culture due to historical circumstances: the need for retribution and the Christian paradigm opposing it. Using the analogy of the trials of writers in postwar France, the author of the article asks what similar problems those who today are considering the choices made by Salomėja Nėris face. Historical circumstances did not allow us to hold the poet accountable, as well as others who decided to take part in the actions that signified the loss of Lithuanian independence. However, symbolic trials keep recurring: sometimes they take a literary form (in plays or novels by contemporary authors), and sometimes they are used as legal instruments that have an impact on the cultural present. In the article, the position that opposes this quest for retribution is called the archaeology of repentance. This is a fairly established way of talking about the poetics and biographical contexts of Salomėja Nėris, in which the attempt to reconstruct the writer’s antemortem state of mind and thoughts plays a significant role. The conclusion is drawn that Salomėja Nėris can be seen as a figure representing Lithuanian historical trauma, a kind of marker of the unreachable historical justice. One of her functions is to remind us of the injustice we have suffered and the impossibility of atonement for it, and instead, to offer a rather problematic form of cultural reconciliation as a solution, where forgiveness for the injustice suffered is only possible after repentance has (or has not) taken place. Keywords: Salomėja Nėris, archaeology of repentance, postwar France, atonement.
