Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Lithuanian writing system corresponds quite well to the sound system of our language, making pronunciation rather straight forward for the most part. On the other hand, there are some evident shortcomings: because of influence from other languages, urban speech or native dialect, many speakers tend to transfer the stress to long syllables, stressed short vowels are lengthened (even at the end of a word), long vowels are shortened, the rules for palatalisation (or non-palatalisation) of consonants are ignored, diphthongs are simplified (monophthonguised) and long vowels are diphthonguised, etc. A few pronunciation errors are caused by orthographic conventions based on morphology rather than phonetics, whereby assimilation of consonants is not indicated and therefore not pronounced, likewise certain interactions of other sounds. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the above-mentioned pronunciation problems and to clarify, by means of a survey, what students’ needs and views are in relation to pronunciation, and to establish pronunciation inadequacies and their causes are perceived. One hundred and twenty (120) respondents took part in the Correct Pronunciation Needs Survey. The survey was meant to clarify how students at different high schools see various pronunciation issue. Overall survey results show that there are no fundamental differences on pronunciation issues between the students of the schools surveyed. Most of the survey respondents evaluate their own pronunciation rather highly, but they do see some shortcomings and would like to overcome those. The respondents’ comments about the teaching of pronunciation shows that pronunciation needs to be improved, as does the teaching thereof.
