Summary / Abstract:

ENWhen modernising the training of teachers of physical education, it is important to evaluate conceptual aspect of physical education prevailing in Lithuanian schools of general education. The research presented in this article is partially dedicated to the solution of this problem. The research is aimed at defining professional regulations of teachers of physical education and justifying their theoretical and methodological assumptions. A total of 263 teachers of physical education took part in a survey conducted in 1998–1999. The analysis of the obtained results revealed different physical education teachers’ attitudes towards the role of human body in physical education: the positive attitude towards human body remains prevailing; however, the concept of the integrity of man is popular among younger teachers. The majority of teachers of physical education have refused the conventional attitude towards sport (as technical issues) and see it as a historically determined, socially created and ever changing social and cultural phenomenon. On the other hand, the biological concept of physical education is clearly prevailing in Lithuanian schools of general education, and it becomes an obstacle on the path of further development of physical education and modernisations of training of teachers of physical education. It is necessary to develop a critical-social study direction in Lithuanian institutions training teachers of physical education. It would put physical education as a study programme focused on physical education beyond the school. The school should pay more attention to the perception of social and cultural aspect of physical activities.
