Summary / Abstract:

ENThe results of the dendrochronological analysis of wooden constructions stratigraphically positioned one on top the other found during the archaeological investigations in the area east of St Casimir's Chapel in the Cathedral are presented in the article. Four layers of wooden pavements were discovered under three levels of stone pavements. The lowest road pavement was laid on the remains of the wooden construction, which were made of joined massive wooden timbers whose cross-section was up to 45x35 cm. Under this construction the remains of the demolished earlier wooden constructions were also found. Elements - boards, logs, timbers - of the second, third and fourth wooden pavements and below constructions were analysed by means of the dendrochronological method and dated. Dendrochronological dating showed that the second, third and fourth wooden pavements were laid in the 14th century: the second pavement was laid at the end of the ninth, the third pavement was laid in 1377, or soon after it, the lowest, fourth, pavement was laid in the fifth decade - the middle of the sixth decade. The massive construction of timbers was built at the beginning of the second decade of the 14th century. The earliest wooden constructions whose remains were discovered in that area were built as early as the 13th century: at the end of the ninth decade, and most likely in the second half of the seventh decade of the 13th century. Chronology of pine tree ring widths covering 371 years was made of the series of ring widths of all 40 dated elements of the wooden constructions in the investigated area starting with the year 1018 and ending with 1388.
