Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Smulkus ir vidutinis verslas; Antreprenerystė; Antrepreneriška organizacija; Small and medium business (SME); Entrepreneurship; Enterprising; Organization.

ENThe aim of this article - to analyze entrepreneurship process and its connection with small and medium seized enterprises (SMEs). One of the main challenges for Lithuania as country in transition is to develop small and medium- seized enterprises. It is important because the flexibility and entrepreneurial incentives of a private SME sector will enable to compete and contribute to wealth creation. There has been developing research interest in the link between entrepreneurship and small business since the start of the 1980s. Entrepreneurship is very important during transition periods: from traditional to modern, from planned economy to free market economy. Entrepreneurship is seen as a tool solving dilemmas and implementing new innovative methods of behaviour. At the beginning of the article is represented definitions of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship and historical development of these concepts. There is no standard and universally accepted definition. All economic schools made their input forming this concept. Summarizing all theoretical background, entrepreneur can be identified - a person who assumes the risk associated with uncertainty; an innovator; a decision maker; a leader; the owner of an enterprise. Then is presented concept of enterprising culture. The entrepreneurial process is an interaction of a complex, multidimensional and dynamic set of factors and circumstances.Main are: entrepreneur, entrepreneurship and culture. As one of the results is creation of firm. Small business faces lots of challenges. Not all small business can be regarded as being entrepreneurial. In order to respond effectively, firms must have competences, which make them entrepreneurial organizations. In recent years concept of enterprising organization has developed rapidly, becoming one of the key theme of modern organization. It's a new phenomenon, requiring different points of view and ways of thinking and one of the reasons why it is rejected by conservative owners of firms. J. Schumpeter entrepreneurship describe as economic process of "creative destruction". Enterprising venture could be described by such characteristics as being: innovative, proactive, prepare to take risk, close to market, flexible, visionary. These features of enterprising organization are developing gradually, because there is a need to change many of existing systems and attitudes. Having in mind context of contemporary business it‘s a necessity for small business to become enterprising. [From the publication]
