Summary / Abstract:

LTXX a. Todėl XX a. II pusės bendruomeniniame gyvenime krikštynos bei vardynos egzistavo kaip savarankiškos žmogaus gimimo fakto įvardijimo apeigos. Straipsnyje keliama vaiko socializacijos problema. ENIn the 1st half of the 20th century christening and registration of birth by a priest were the only legal birth registration forms in Lithuania (till 1945 except Lithuania Minor, where civil metrics existed). After the Soviet occupation, the Church was separated from the state and civil metrics were introduced. The sacral birth certification was attempted to be replaced by new ceremonies without any religious content, i. e. name giving. Therefore in the community life of the 2nd half of the 20th century christening and name giving existed as two self-sufficient rituals. The article raises the problem of socialization of a child. The main source of the study is the ethnographic field study materials, collected in 1999. Upon performing the study it can be stated that in the Northeastern Lithuania christening remained a live tradition of legitimation of birth, sensing the traits of the national and religious identity. In the course of time, influenced by historical and political circumstances the said traditions did not lose their most important ritual traits. The Soviet times had an influence on the choice of time for christening however the trend of postponing the time of christening, characteristic of the fifties – eighties of the 20th century can be also noted after 1991. The Soviet times determined the classifying of christening as a public religious ritual. Christening turned into an issue of a specific person and his family. The feeling of community responsibility and control was reduced. The local peculiarities of christening traditions, which survived on the territory in question, are an important phenomenon, evidencing the relevance of continuation of the tradition. The christening, after withstanding the political pressure, remained the most important sensing of a person’s life cycle, while name giving is still quite frequently described as a forced act.
