Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article is an attempt (not the first one) to provide an answer to the question how the protection of cultural heritage in the independent Lithuania was taken care of, to be precise, the extent of care, taken by the state, which had to ensure the protection of the cultural heritage. The previous studies identified that during the interwar period neither an institutional, nor a legal cultural heritage protection system was developed, however the question why such a situation had emerged, still remains unanswered. Therefore the article offers the answer to the question why neither an institutional, nor a legal cultural heritage protection system was developed during the interwar times. The authoritarian regime was oriented towards strengthening of the basis of nationality and determined the search for nationality in the ethno-cultural heritage, which was considered an undoubted aspect and unquestionable value. Looking back on the ethno-cultural heritage seemed the straightest and most reliable way for the national and cultural distinction. The history of the nation was attempted to be replaced by the national tradition, connecting the ideas of statehood and ethnicity. The tradition, which did not require to view the past as a consistent historical process, allowed for connecting the ethno-cultural legacy and archeological heritage, by providing an appearance of a consistent development for Lithuanian culture, which shaped the selective view of the cultural heritage by the authorities, refusing the development of the system for protection of the heritage and released from the responsibility to decide the difficult problems of protection of cultural heritage.
