Summary / Abstract:

ENThe Italian Dominican, Jacob of Voragine, sometime between 1260 and 1270 compiled a collection of “lives” of saints (also known under the title “Golden Legend”) which became very popular during the Middle Ages. According to H. Delehaye, it is a compilation that summarises the entire work of medieval hagiography. The “Golden Legend” is the earliest known (first mentioned in 1398) and one of the most common works of Catholic hagiography in Lithuania. The spread of the "Golden Legend” is evident in messages found in various sources and old prints from the 15th and 16th centuries, which mostly belonged to the libraries of religious institutions and clergy. Among the owners, the Dominican friars and their convents (in Vilnius, Lukiškės, Grodno, and other places) stand out, having preserved the work of their brother in their libraries. For the Dominicans, the “Golden Legend” was also important because of the inclusion of one of the few contemporary saints, St. Dominic. According to J. Le Goff, it is very similar to a historical narrative. The legends (for example, about the meeting of St. Francis and St. Dominic) spread widely and gave rise to new artistic themes. The “Golden Legend” not only influenced the depiction of the saints, but gives understanding to many representations in religious art. [From the publication p. 314]
