Summary / Abstract:

ENWorld Health Organization identifies preventive behavior as a particularly important tool to limit the spread of the infection in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. After figuring out the pathways of COVID-19 virus and taking experience of combating previous pandemics into consideration, several public science-based preventive measures that can reduce the spread of the virus and protect from infection were offered. However, primary research data from various countries show that people do not always follow not only the recommendations but also the strict quarantine rules. Therefore, it is relevant to examine what factors are related to the intention to follow the preventive recommendations. It is also important to study the attitudes of citizens towards preventive measures, compliance with recommendations and intentions, and the factors that will determine them in the future. The aim of the study is to reveal the importance of psychological factors for preventive behavior in the context of COVID-19 and intentions to follow preventive measures in the future. Methods. 472 respondents participated in the study. 85.4 percent were women, and a mean age was 35.1 years. An online survey questionnaire was prepared for the study, which consisted of demographic questions and scales to assess intentions to follow the recommended COVID-19 infection control measures, personal attitudes, perceived social norms, the trust in information sources, and health locus of control.Results. The study revealed that from 86.0 to 99.0 percent of respondents not only followed the recommendations in the past to wear masks, keep a distance when communicating, limit unnecessary contacts, visit retail outlets less often, follow the rules of self-isolation, but also intend to follow them in the future. 75.6 percent are going to get vaccinated. No significant differences were found when comparing responses across groups by demographic characteristics. Intentions for future preventive behavior are related to the variables assessed in the study. Conclusions. Most study participants followed the recommended preventive measures. Intentions to continue to follow the recommendations are best predicted by behavior-specific personal attitudes and social norms, trust in official sources of information, beliefs about one‘s own health control, and poorer health.
