Studentų pasirengimo lygio indentifikavimas matematikos dalyko studijoms
Alternative Title:
Identification the level of students’ readiness to study mathematics
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe test of Lithuanian students’ knowledge of mathematics shows that our students’ knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences is weaker compared not only with the EU average, but also with our neighbours, Latvians, and Estonians with the active support of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, the Ministry of Education and Science has decided that it is compulsory to take the state maturity exam in mathematics when entering the state-funded study places. Education centers of Mathematical Technology and Natural Sciences (STEAM) are being established in Lithuania, and state funding for technological science studies is being increased annually. This is clearly a concern for both schools and employers. The problems analysed in this article are related to the insufficient preparation of students’ knowledge of mathematics for their further studies. The aim of the research is to determine the level of students’ readiness to study mathematics. Students in the study had to solve 16 math problems in Alytaus kolegija/University of Applied Sciences. The total score of the students who took part in the study showed that the students solved almost a third of the tasks correctly. On average, one student solved 6 tasks correctly. It was noticed that some students do not have the necessary mathematical knowledge. Students of Automobile Transport Engineering, Company Administration and Transport and Logistics Business study programmes showed the best mathematical knowledge, and students of Accounting study programme showed the worst knowledge. The following aspects were selected for the comparative analysis of the 2020 and 2021 year research results: the level of students’ learning in mathematics, the annual marks in mathematics in the certificate, and the totals of the total scores obtained. 2021 first-year students of Alytaus kolegija/University of Applied Sciences are better prepared to study mathematics.
