ENLithuanians have always liked to enrich their language with proverbs: they try to make a word sound both accurate and figurative at the same time. Proverbs reveal details of the folk household: practical features of activities, as well as moral standards, morality, diligence and other values. At the same time, alongside direct teachings, proverbs are rich in metaphors, poetic thoughts and associations. The subject of this article is the analysis of proverbs that mention bread. The aim of the article is to discuss the content of proverbs, highlighting the ideas expressed in them, and determining the place and the role of proverbs in folk life, as well as to find out how bread is treated in Lithuanian folk proverbs, and to provide a detailed analysis of the image of bread. Research was conducted using methods of description, stylistic analysis and interpretation. The article analyses how much proverbs about bread reflect reality, what the actual approach to bread in folk life was, and what values were nurtured and implemented for future generations through proverbs. In all proverbs, without exception, bread is spoken of with respect, and not laughed at or ridiculed. It has to be respected and cherished. Most proverbs about bread are inseparable from the topic of work: bread is described as being the fruit of very hard work, people are especially urged to earn their own bread, and laziness is condemned. The importance of bread in the diet of peasants was also reflected in the family, calendar feasts and other customs. Bread occupied a particularly important place at weddings, as well as in funeral and baptism ceremonies. It was also often used in agricultural rites. Later in the article, the symbolic meaning of bread is analysed: when and why the concept of bread is used for comparisons, parallels, contrasts, and allegorical and symbolic meanings of life’s phenomena.Probably due to the versatility of bread itself, the noun for bread is also often used in proverbs in the sense of whole food, and more broadly for subsistence and maintenance. The personification of bread, a stylistic figure of speech of language, when objects from the inanimate world are given human features and characteristics, allows us to judge even better the importance and the place of the concept of bread in the whole folk mindset. It is not only endowed with human qualities, but the predicate of the noun for bread is often a word that usually indicates the high status of a person in society. [From the publication]
