ENDespite the gradual strengthening of specialist legal institute in criminal procedure in Lithuanian there is a very little scientific researches in Lithuanian legal doctrine regarding this legal institute, and true issues of this. The aim of the research is to reveal and evaluate the peculiarities, current situation and issues of the specialist legal institute in criminal proceedings in Lithuanian law comparing them to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Latvia. So in order to reach this aim the research was carried out by employing the logical, the teleological, the comparative legal methods, the system analysis, the linguistic, the synthesising methods and the analysis of legal documents. Research results show some deep issues in Lithuanian legal regulation of specialist procedural status, failures to establish clear specialist’s functions in criminal evidentiary procedure, his/her necessary participation in different pre-trial procedural actions as well as reveal the meaning of this procedural subject participation in stage of judicial investigation. Moreover, research analyses some issues in neighbouring counties related to the devaluation of the meaning of expert examination in Latvian law and complicated accessibility of specialist investigation to defence side in pre-trial investigation in Russian law.
