ENThe article analyses the text preserved in a manuscript entitled Czo za prawa X. Litewskie ma do ziemie Infl ianczki a poliaczi do niei nicz niemaią (What rights has the Duchy of Lithuania to Livonian lands while the Poles have none) dedicated to the justifi cation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’ rights to the whole territory of Livonia. The aim of the analysis is to identify the images and concepts that were formed in the political consciousness of the Lithuanian nobility and reflected their attitude to the Union of Lublin (1569) and their partners in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The text was most probably written in 1582. Its author is unknown, but it is obvious that the document was written by a representative of the GDL. It creates the image of a Pole as a “guest” who ignores the rights and interests of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The unknown author called the conclusion of the Lublin Union in 1569 a “violence”, and insisted on a “just” settlement of the dispute over the rights to the territory of Livonia. Nonetheless, even such a critical of Poland work reveals that the political nation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania did not question the legality of the Union of Lublin and the need to create a common Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The study’s results make important contribution to advanced research into the GDL nobility’s political culture, as well as relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish Kingdom.
