ENThe Lithuanian troops in the Battle of Kletsk (Polish: Kleck) of 1506 were made up mainly of the levy en masse nobles that formed the basis of the armed forces of the Commonwealth at that time. The imperfection of this form of organisation of the army made necessary the employment of mercenaries more oft en (for example, the mercenary light cavalry known as the Racs), and the enlargement of the unit of hospodar courtiers. The first decade of the sixteenth century also brought about the regulations and rules of the military service of noblemen in the scale of the whole Commonwealth and the fi rst military articles. As regards weaponry and equipment in the vast Ruthenian lands belonging to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, some traditional local weapons were still in use. At the same time, however, there was a strong impact of the development of European military science. Another critical factor shaping the armament model were wars with Moscow, and the Crimean Khanate waged continuously since the end of the fi ft eenth century. For all their faults, at the beginning of the sixteenth century the Lithuanian troops were equal in terms of their combat capability to their main enemies and were able to defeat them, as in the 1506 Battle of Kletsk.
