Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyses factors that influence choosing the individual way of life and the role of education in forming a decision making competence. The article seeks to analyse a decision making competence and methods of its formation from a philosophically critical point of view, including the education as one of the associated methods. The first part of the article introduces a decision making competence, potential factors making the influence while choosing the way of life, and the process of making individual decisions; and describes different philosophical and psychological attitudes towards this problem. The second part analyses the inconsistency between the essence of decision making and educational means used in order to form a decision making competence. Personal autonomy vs. attempts to increase quality of decisions made is the most complex and extensive dilemma to be solved. Ensuring personal autonomy, when someone is choosing the way of life and is making decisions, forms a decision making competence in an individual. In conclusion, the author states that the autonomy itself does not play a key role, but it is necessary in order to help people acting independently in a social context present. The role of educational institutions and parents here is not to make decisions (notwithstanding the knowledge possessed), but to ensure autonomy of pupils and form a decision making competence. Based on the idea of liberal education, personal autonomy is one of social values that must be implanted in a process of education. Education system which is linked to solving this problem helps acquiring a decision making competence and creates career oriented decision making models involving both rational and alternative attitudes.
