Summary / Abstract:

ENThe analysis of the accounts of four different emigrant communities has shown that most parallels emerge among those emigrants who left Lithuania due to economic necessity. This includes Argentinian Lithuanians whose parents or grandparents emigrated from Lithuania before the Second World War, the new wave of emigrants in Canada, Lithuanian emigrants in the United Kingdom and Norway. The narratives of these emigrants have not only elicited very similar stories of emigration but they have also revealed a similar trend among them to make language choices and decisions based on pragmatic grounds. Lithuanian is used at home by the majority of the first-generation emigrant families constituted of a single (Lithuanian) ethnicity. The study has shown that Lithuanian was used in the private domain by the majority of Argentinian Lithuanians, Lithuanian is also spoken in the Lithuanian families residing in Norway, United Kingdom and in the homes of newly arrived Canadian Lithuanians. However, when families are presented with their first challenges affecting their language management such as the intrusion of the host language brought by the children to the home domain, they usually abandon even their pre-planned language policy and ideology of seeking Lithuanian language maintenance. Having acquired substantial proficiency in the host language from the environment, the young generation born in the country of emigration start to use it at home as the stronger language. The host language becomes the main tool of communication among siblings and peers. Children tend to start responding in the local language when their parents address them in Lithuanian. Sometimes the host language rather than Lithuanian is chosen as the language of communication even in single-ethnicity (Lithuanian) families with the intention of their members’ faster integration into the society of the country of residence and more successful adaptation in the host country.
