ENThe free accent found in some Baltic and Slavic languages is generally agreed to be the direct reflex of the free accent reconstructed for the Indo-European proto-language. When it comes to the more precise relationship between the Balto-Slavic and Proto-Indo-European accentuation systems, there is considerably less agreement. This contribution contains an introduction to the Balto-Slavic accentuation system and a presentation of some of the most important areas of disagreement. This leads to an overview of four different approaches to perhaps the most discussed problem in the field of Balto-Slavic prosody, namely that of the origin of the Balto-Slavic mobile accent paradigms.
