ENThis study examines the first general census of the Jews in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of 1764-65. It focuses on the towns of Nowemiasto, Poniewież, and Poswol and the surrounding rural areas. The demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the Karaite and Rabbanite Communities are compared. Special attention is given to the distribution and characteristics of inns and to their function in the geographical spread and mobility of Jewish population.
