Summary / Abstract:

LTŠiame straipsnyje feminizmas suprantamas kaip specifinis moteriškas požiūris į pasaulį. Feminizmas leidžia naujai pažvelgti į moters identiškumų, diskriminacijos šaltinius ir pan. Jo pakraipos siūlo įvairius būdus savo vertei įsisąmoninti ir pateikia netradicinius moters elgesio variantus. Straipsnyje aprašomas akademinėje aplinkoje paplitęs feministinis diskursas, daugiausia dėmesio skiriant Lietuvos realijoms. ENThe aim of the article is to describe the feminist discourse in the academic community, to reveal the reasons of self-identification with feminists among women-scholars. The article presents data of the empirical qualitative research „An Academic Woman's Identity from Central and East Europe“ conducted in 1998-2000 by the author. Woman's identity was investigated using Kuhn-McPartland Twenty-Statements Test (TST). Each woman has been asked to write 20 responses to the question „Who am I“. „Significant others“ have been asked to define a feminist. All investigated women and interviewed women and men were from the so- called mixed gender research area: humanities and social sciences. An academic community defines feminism as the striving for women's equal rights and opportunities. Scholars defining a feminist usually refer to feminism as well. Men's outlook on feminism is conditioned by their knowledge of feminist ideology; the lack of information means the negative point of view on feminism. Lithuanian elder and younger men stick to the negative stereotype of a feminist. Middle-aged men have some professional knowledge about the feminist theory. They define a feminist as a professional working on feminist problematics or as a woman who is very sensitive to women's discrimination. Women scholars usually define a feminist as a woman-reseacher interested in feminism or a politically active individual promoting the feminist ideology. The women involved in feminist problematics usually doubt whether they are feminists. Actually each of them notes that she is often defined as a feminist because of professional interest. Among investigated Lithuanian academic women no one identified herself with feminism despite that some of them are involved in women's studies. [From the publication]
