ENThe article deals with the problems of translating names of colours from Latvian into Lithuanian. The analysis is based on the story "Kalpa zēna vasara" by Jānis Akuraters and its translations: "Samdinio bernioko vasara" (1972; translated by Kostas Korsakas) and "Kumečio bernioko vasara" (2007; translated by Alfredas Stratas). The original text, "Kalpa zēna vasara" by Jānis Akuraters, contains 182 adjectives, adverbs, abstract nouns and various verb forms having the following roots denoting a colour: balt-/bāl- ('white'), sirm- ('grey-haired'), pelēk- ('grey'), meln- ('black'), brūn- ('brown'), sark- I sarc- ('red'), sārt- ('rosy; pink'), dzelt-('yellow'), zal- ('green'), zil- ('blue'). 168 nardfes of colours are simple, primary and derived, names containing one root, 9 derivative compound words, 5 names consisting of two words. Most words are used denoting white, black, green and red colours since tree leaves and the grass are green - the nature is very important in the neoromantic work while the rest three colours, on the whole, have a bright connotation. K. Korsakas with his translation "Samdinio bernioko vasara" proved he is a professional translator. Lithuanian equivalents of Latvian names of colours have been chosen according both to the particularity of the Lithuanian nation's thinking and to the environment of the particular unit of the language, i.e. macrocontext and microcontext. As far as possible, in the translation the preference is given to the words denoting not a colour but shades; the analytical structures of the translative language have been changed into the verbs consisting of one word; the equivalents of the more particular meaning have been found for the words of the abstract meaning denoting a colour, etc. That is why the translation corresponds to the requirements of the good la.
