Summary / Abstract:

ENIn her article the author analyzes the perception of the world and oneself by a post-colonial subject in Lithuanian prose referring to the two parts, the first and the last, of the trilogy by Lithuanian author Ričardas Gavelis, i. e. his novels "Vilniaus Pokeris" (1989) and "Paskutinė Žemės Žmonių Karta" (1995). According to the author of the article the accoutrements in R. Gavelis’s books are completely Western, however, since a post-colonial person is devoid of illusion, is rejected, refused and not ready for such small difference between the East and the West, he “must grow” beginning with his childhood, through all the phases of development, in order to reach the cynical materialistic “maturity”. During the process the person can simply destroy the whole world. If we are lucky, he will retreat from reality before destroying us all, however the author of the article is of the opinion that R. Gavelis wants to tell us that he will sweep everything in his path impulsively and drag everybody down together. In the opinion of the author of the article, in his trilogy R. Gavelis goes great lengths in order to unveil the post-colonial, post-Soviet mentality, which is difficult to understand to the Western man.
