Mitologinis praeities įsivaizdavimas: milžinai

LTLietuvių folklore aiškiai atspindimos trys epochos: iki žmonių gyveno milžinai, įie buvo žmonių protėviai, o po žmonių ateis nykštukų laikai. Milžinai žūva tvano metu, o žmoniją mirtis ištiks dėl maro, arba likavos. Tokią tridalę istorijos sampratą galime apibendrinti opozicija norma vs. ne-norma. Milžinai yra per dideli, o nykštukai — per maži, tad abu yra nukrypimai į vieną ir kitą pusę nuo žmonių, kurie atstovauja normai. ENArchaic consciousness viewed time as cyclical, repetitive, and continuously renewing. However, this idea was also accompanied by a sense of history creative visions of past eras. This article explores that specific sense of “history” within Lithuanian mythology. Lithuanian folklore clearly depicts three epochs: initially, giants existed before humans and were their ancestors. The pivotal event that separated the epochs of giants and humans was a flood, which eradicated the giants. The human epoch, too, has its limits. After humankind, the dwarfs will come. The event marking the transition from the human epoch to that of the dwarfs will be a plague, although it is not as prominently featured in Lithuanian folklore as the myth of the flood. This three-part history concept can be summarised by contrasting the norm with non-norm. Giants are too big, while dwarfs are too small. Both differ from the balanced state embodied by humans, who represent the norm.
