Summary / Abstract:

LTKaip matome, nekvestionuojamos etimologijos nėra. Jei neignoruosime įterpinio -k- ir tvirtapradės priegaidės, formaliai teisingi atrodo Ostrowskio ir Blažeko samprotavimai. Tačiau jie turi savų trūkumų. Perkūnas kaip ‘turintis ąžuolą’ iki galo neįtikina dėl neįprastos semantinės kelionės krypties – greičiau objektas pašvęstas dievui gautų vardą nuo jo, nei atvirkščiai. Be to, juk ne vien ąžuolai buvo pašvęsti Perkūnui. Tuo tarpu Blažeko etimologinė reikšmė išvis iki galo neaiški. Ko gero, ją reikėtų suprasti kaip ‘periantis akmenį’. O gal ‘periantis akmeniu’? Bet kokiu atveju, atrodytų labai keista ir tai, kad Perkūnas ir Perunas būtų etimologiškai nesusiję. Vis dėlto minėtosios įterpinio -k- ir tvirtapradės priegaidės problemos užkerta šiai sąsajai kelią. Perkūno etimologijos problematiškumą gerai iliustruoja faktas, kad 2015 m. Brill leidyklos išleistame Etymological Dictionary of the Baltic Inherited Lexicon63 Perkūnas išvis nefigūruoja. [p. 393].

ENThe article analyses the ongoing academic debate on the etymology of the Baltic thunder god Perkūnas. It mainly focuses on two ‘traditional’ etymological theories that were proposed in the nineteenth century but are still in active polemic with each other to this day. One of them holds Perkūnas to be a deverbative from the root *per-, meaning ‘to beat’, ‘to lash’. The other one holds it to be a denominative from the Indo-European noun *perkwu- ‘oak’. Their arguments and counterarguments are presented and discussed. The genetic connection between the Baltic Perkūnas and the Slavic Perun is called into question. Finally, recent alternative etymologies are introduced. It is concluded that at this point we still do not have a consensus on the given question: each of the etymologies still has some problems to solve.
