Summary / Abstract:

ENDrawing on the methodological principles of perceptual dialectology, the article provides an analysis of the images of the linguistic homeland of the young people living in Vilkaviškis (84), i.e. the localisation of the native surroundings on drawn maps (160) and the attitude of schoolchildren to the language they speak from the aspects of correctness and attractiveness. The image of the linguistic homeland becomes clear when the maps with dialectal zones marked by young people and the areas of standard language are compared, the frequency of the choice of the dialectal code and the domains of usage are discussed, and auto-stereotypes and hetero-stereotypes and dialectal peculiarities noticed in the language of one’s own and others’ are also studied. The research results demonstrate that Vilkaviškis zone is not homogenous: schoolchildren find it difficult to distinguish or are not able to distinguish dialect speech from standard language. Vilkaviškis is considered to be both as a zone where dialect (29.6%) and non-dialect (28.4%) is spoken, as well as an area where both language codes are used (18%). The town is eliminated from the maps of almost one-fifth of the respondents. The localisation of the dialectal linguistic homeland is usually expanded including neighbouring areas and is among other prototypical dialect zones or its area almost coincides with the borders of the subdialect of the entire region. Linguistic homeland attributed to the area of standard language is inseparable from the district of Marijampolė, where a triple linguistic expression is also recorded, of which a non-dialectal expression is most frequently recorded. The degree of the attractiveness of the linguistic homeland and the language of neighbouring areas attributed to it is rather high – here almost half of the respondents speak in dialect (47.62%) and have a favourable opinion of the linguistic variant used.Dialectal code is similarly often chosen in separate (34.52%) and solidarity (32.1%) domains, while its use in instrumental public domains is less frequent (13.10%). People who speak in dialect are most often linked to their place of origin and residence (21.43%), with their past and the oldest generation (20.24%), respect for their country and traditions (19.05%). The factors mentioned as well as a not very exact enumeration of the features characteristic of their own subdialect allows us to speak about the vitality and continuation of the Vilkaviškis subdialect.
