ENIn Baltic only original root nouns with no clear connection to primary verbs have survived as a semi-separate category, whereas the original deverbative root nouns, undoubtedly a category represented in PIE, have apparently disappeared altogether in Baltic. The reason for this discrepancy, i.c. the different treatment of nominal and deverbative root nouns in Baltic, may be explained by a closer look at the Baltic derivational system. Due to the fact that the deverbative root nouns were accompanied by verbal forms, they can be assumed to have easily been incorporated into the Baltic derivational system at an early stage. Another important factor may be that Proto- Baltic had inherited thematic deverbative nouns from Proto-Indo-European with semantics and ablaut similar to the root nouns. The original deverbative root nouns may have been absorbed by this larger and productive thematic noun-forming class. [From the publication]
