ENThe main aim of this paper is to publish and describe a map of the frontier between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Prussia from the collection of the Manuscript Department of Vilnius University Library. The map was ordered by Michał Kleop Oginski, the grand treasurer of Lithuania, and was prepared in 1788. The network of customs posts and frontier guardhouses of the grand duchy is marked on the map. It also shows the structure of the protection of the frontier. The map is a valuable source for historical geography, and gives detailed notes about settlements in the frontier zone, and allows historians to ask questions about the status of settlements, the mobility of the population, and the network of overland routes. All these questions highlight cultural and trade contacts. The document also traces the 18th-century concept of space imparted by the special symbols used, which could be useful in cartographic studies of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. [From the publication]
