Summary / Abstract:

ENA typological analysis of the structure of composite sentences used in the poem Metai (The Seasons) by Kristijonas Donelaitis (the research database is made of 185 composite sentences) shows their great composition capacities and a variety of syntactic expressions. The majority of composite sentences are complex sentences (49%). Complex sentences of adverbial modifier (of cause, manner, time) are an especially common functional type. The range of connecting elements of subordinate clauses in individual functional types slightly differs from the modern standard language; in some cases they can be traced back to the writings of the 16th-17th century. Compared to the old writings, there is a clear tendency of domination of subordinate clauses introduced by conjunction kad, which is already multifunctional in this case. The second position is taken by multicomponential composite sentences (made of combinations of different components of subordinate, coordinate and asyndetic connection) - they make up nearly one-third of all composite sentences (27%).The poem Metai shows clear coherence and causality of all thoughts expressed by the components of a multicomponential composite sentence. It determines the use of multicomponential composite sentences dominated by coordinate connection. Compound sentences are less common, accounting for 21% of all composite sentences. A clear dominance of sentences of comparative and contrastive type of connection can be explained by the poet’s intention to compare and contrast the depicted reality, to highlight and single out the events. The type of asyndetic sentences is the least common - they make up barely 3% of all composite sentences and do not show any greater variety. They reveal the poet’s disposition to accumulate information within a single extended sentence rather than several separate sentences of simpler composition. The syntax of composite sentence in the poem Metai reveals the features of the living language and can be characterised as natural and fluent. [From the publication]
